Athens (Ohio) Messenger sports reporter catches game winning FG on video in rivalry game

Jason Arkley, sports reporter for the Athens (Ohio) Messenger and member of the ACM Digital Reporter Project, provided some great multimedia coverage of Friday night’s big game between two undefeated rivals.

A victory for either team meant an undefeated regular season and a playoff spot.

Arkley, using his iPad2 workstation, caught the game winning field goal on video. See it below:

The Messenger also put together a 6-minute highlight reel on the big game.

As of Nov. 2, the Athens Messenger has uploaded 331 videos and those videos have received more than 116,000 views for an average of 352 views per video.

The Messenger also provided some great coverage in its print edition. See the gallery of pages below:

Athlon Sports offers great pages, content for your newspaper

Hey sports editors, are you always searching for unique national sports content that your regional competitor doesn’t offer?

Well, have you tried Athlon Sports? If not, their pages and content are worth a look.

Many of our markets run Athlon Sports’ monthly magazine insert in their Sunday or weekend product, but the company also offers — free of charge — unique content to run in the pages of our newspapers.

Right now, Athlon Sports has weekly NFL and NCAA football pages to use, as well as content on NASCAR. During the season, Athlon Sports offers weekly pages on Major League Baseball, college basketball, golf and more.

I know many of our markets focus on an entirely 100 percent local sports section — as they should — but if you do want to offer enhanced national content, Athlon Sports provides some great features.

And remember, it’s all free of charge. All Athlon Sports wants is the exposure for its magazine and other print publications.

It’s a win-win, baby!

If you are interested in using Athlon Sports content, please email Karen Coleman with Athlon Sports at karen.coleman@athlonsports.com and she will set you up with a user name and password to access the content from a web-based server.

Stephenville (TX) Empire-Tribune sees great response from Prep Football Blitz weekly football section

Brad Keith, Stephenville sports editor

Earlier this month, ACM Newsroom received some feedback on how the weekly Prep Football Blitz section is being received from the Stephenville (Texas) community.

Our daily newspaper in Stephenville, Texas, the Empire-Tribune, was one of seven markets that launched Prep Football Blitz this fall. Not only has the response to the section been positive from the community, coaches and players, but it also generated plus-revenue for the operation.

Empire-Tribune sports editor Brad Keith shared these thoughts on the section with ACM Newsroom?

What has been the reaction of the readers to the weekly section?

Brad Keith: t I have seen (the Blitz)  gain momentum from week to week. Recently hired ad exec Stephanie Gade – who sold the Blitz Bit – even volunteered to hand out copies at Stephenville’s season opener that had 8,000 fans in attendance, and at Tarleton’s that had 6,400. (Tarleton State University is based in Stephenville.) I vividly recall walking up the steps to Tarleton Memorial Stadium that night and seeing a college student at the top of the stairs, leaning on a rail, flipping through the Blitz. I was angry at myself for having left my cell phone in the press box and not being able to do a quick mobile upload.”

How are received any feedback from readers, coaches, fans, etc?

BK: Coach Cary Fowler at Tarleton LOVES the Blitz. I set some copies out in the lobby of TexasBank where his radio show is every Thursday, and each week he compliments us on it.

Do you think it has been a boost to your sports section, and readership? Also, can you talk about the video you are producing each week and posting on your website to promote the Blitz?

BK:  The video is something we are learning as we go, and each week an idea of how to do it a little better is discovered (helps that I did radio for five years, and Nathan (sports reporter for the E-T and the Glen Rose (Texas) Reporter) has dabbled in radio as well). I think this is the case with all the new, extra coverage we are providing, and in time, I fully believe everyone will have a good handle on how to do it even more efficiently and successfully. Also, the Blitz has been a boost to the sports section because with football previews out of the way on Thursday/Friday, cross country/volleyball/youth sport kids are getting unprecedented ink on the regular sports pages. More kids equals more readers has always been my belief and I know for a fact my publishers and editors agree wholeheartedly.”

Stephenville (Texas) Empire-Tribune sports staff talks football with weekly videocast

The sports staff of the Stephenville (Texas) Empire-Tribune is doing a weekly videocast to promote their coverage of the high school football season in their market.

What a great idea!

They are shooting the videocast on location at a local restaurant, and spend 10 minutes talking about the big games that week as well as promoting the newspaper’s weekly preview section and game-day coverage.

Could this idea work in your market? I bet it could.

Check out the video.

We are also proud to report that the Prep Football Blitz project exceed its total revenue goal.

Here is a comment from Brad Keith, sports editor of the Stephenville (TX) Empire-Tribune about the section, “No hitches, love it, had a great time putting it together, can’t wait until next week when it expands with Tarleton’s opener!”

Said Gene Deason, editor at Brownwood, “I think the section exceeds expectations from a content and appearance level, and it is plus-business in revenue with opportunities to grow during the season, as Juliet will expound. Pages are online in the e-edition with the rest of the Thursday product.”

Thank you to all the sports editors, editors and advertising directors and sales staffers for tackling this project and making it a big success.

We hope to see more ACM newspapers join the Prep Football Blitz family in 2012!
